Dr. Ferrando's work focuses on the prevention of muscle mass and functional losses after injury, trauma, major surgery, or other stress states. Dr. Ferrando’s investigations of muscle protein metabolism are conducted utilizing stable isotope methodology in these physiological conditions. His body of work includes investigations during space flight, including experiments aboard the Space Shuttle, after burn injury and trauma, hip replacement surgery, renal failure, heart failure, and in the aging process. His work has focused on pharmacological, nutritional, and exercise interventions designed to restore anabolic influence to skeletal muscle and preserve muscle mass and/or function. His current efforts focus on nutritional and exercise interventions with aging and aging-related morbidities.

A life-long athlete, his athletic endeavors span from a college gymnast at West Point, to a competitive power lifter, body-builder, masters track and field athlete, to his current position as a Krav Maga instructor. A retired Army LtCol and helicopter pilot of 23 yrs, his academic career spans over 20 yrs and counting.
