President

Tim N. Ziegenfuss, Ph.D., FISSN is the Chief Executive Officer of The Center for Applied Health Sciences and the Director of Scientific Affairs at Biotest Laboratories. Dr. Ziegenfuss is a Fellow of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, and is the Chair of the Exercise Physiology and Sports Nutrition program at Huntington College of Health Sciences. Dr. Ziegenfuss is an internationally known author, speaker, and researcher with expertise in dietary supplements, exercise science, and sports nutrition. In addition to authoring book chapters on nutritional ergogenic aids, antioxidants, protein, and over-the-counter hormones, Dr. Ziegenfuss has written hundreds of articles in well known magazines, been quoted in Scientific American, and made presentations in Washington DC on behalf of the dietary supplement industry. As a sports nutritionist, his client list includes current and former Olympic Track and Field athletes, Professional Mixed Martial Arts fighters, NFL, MLB, NHL, high school and NCAA athletes, firefighters, police, Department of Homeland Security personnel, and the U.S. Military including the Army, Navy Seals, and Secret Service.

Vice President

Marie Spano, MS, RD, FISSN, CSCS is a leading authority on translating the latest nutrition and exercise science research into real life applications.  Ms. Spano has consulted with leading food, beverage and supplement companies, helping them reach their intended consumers.  She has also helped Olympic athletes, NFL-bound athletes and Fortune 500 executives enhance their health and performance by incorporating sound nutrition and supplement strategies.  Prior to starting her own company, she worked in the Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity at the CDC - our nations top preventive health agency.  Ms. Spano has effectively communicated nutrition information to the public through all forms of media including TV, radio, magazine articles, trade publication articles, book chapters, e-zines and press release.  Ms. Spano holds an MS in Nutrition from the University of Georgia where she worked as a graduate assistant in the athletic department and a BS degree is in Exercise and Sports Science from UNC, Greensboro, NC.

Abbie Smith, MS, CSCS, CISSN is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Oklahoma where she co-coordinates the Metabolic and Body Composition Laboratory. She received her undergraduate degree in Health and Exercise Science from Truman State University, and her Masters at the University of Oklahoma. Abbie is currently studying under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey R. Stout, where her research is focused on nutritional and training interventions to improve performance, general health and body composition. She has contributed to the scientific community at the NSCA and ACSM since 2005 and continues to share the latest research through her column in the Sports Nutrition Insider, scholastic books and through various peer-reviewed journals.

Anthony L. Almada has worked within the natural products industry since 1975. He performed his graduate research at Berkeley in antioxidant and exercise biochemistry. In 1992 he co-founded EAS, the first company to commercialize and validate creatine, and helped build it into the world’s largest sports nutrition company in the 1990s. He then co-founded a medical food company focused on the prevention of HIV-associated muscle wasting. He has collaborated on over 95 university and private research clinical trials, ranging from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) to weight and fat loss treatments. He is the President and CEO of GENr8, Inc., an evidence-based performance nutrition brand originating out of a UK-based university muscle metabolism laboratory, focusing upon both physique and endurance athletes, from auto racing to windsurfing.


Amanda Carlson, M.S., RD is the director of performance nutrition and research at Athletes Performance (www.athletesperformance.com). She earned her bachelors degree in Nutritional Science from the University of Arizona and then went on to complete a Masters degree in both Sports Nutrition and Exercise Physiology from Florida State University. Amanda is committed to helping APs athletes across all facilities achieve their maximum performance potential through the integration of effective nutrition into their lives. Amanda works directly with the AP Performance Nutrition Team to help create year-long systems of success for all AP athletes. She also coordinates the companys performance research, undertaking both case studies and peer-reviewed research to help AP stay on the on the cutting edge of Sports Science. Amanda has delivered both educational seminars and individual consulting to a variety of professional and elite sports organizations and a number of state and national conferences. She also has helped to develop nutrition portion of the coreperformance.com website where she has a weekly column. Amanda also contributes to many sports and fitness based publications, sits on various advisory boards for sports nutrition education development and position papers, has edited various sports nutrition books and educational texts, and evaluates current research for the American Dietetic Associations Evidence Based Library.


Steven J. Fleck, Ph.D., FISSN is chair of the sport science department at Colorado College in Colorado Springs. He earned a PhD in exercise physiology from Ohio State University in 1978. He has headed the physical conditioning program of the U.S. Olympic Committee; served as strength coach for the German Volleyball Association; and coached high school track, basketball, and football. Dr. Fleck is a former vice president of basic and applied research for the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). He was honored in 1991 as the NSCA Sport Scientist of the Year.


B. Sue Graves, Ed.D. is the chair of the Exercise Science and Health Promotion Department at Florida Atlantic University. She earned her doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in exercise physiology and biomechanics. She currently is vice-president of the National Strength and Conditioning Associations Nutrition, Metabolism, and Body Composition Special Interest Group. Dr. Graves has conducted several studies with Dr. Jeff Stout that focuses on nutrition intervention and the older adult (ages 55+). In addition, Dr. Graves is an associate editor of the Strength and Conditioning Journal and has served as a reviewer for other scientific research journals.


Mike Greenwood, Ph.D., FISSN is currently a Professor in the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation at Baylor University. At Baylor he serves as the HHPR Graduate Director for Exercise Physiology/Strength & Conditioning as well the Research Coordinator primarily involved with the Center for Exercise, Nutrition & Preventive Health and the Exercise & Sport Nutrition Laboratory. Mike is a Fellow of the International Society of Sport Nutrition [ISSN], National Strength & Conditioning Association [NSCA] and American College of Sport Medicine [ACSM]. Dr. Greenwood is certified as strength & conditioning specialist recognized with distinction by the NSCA and has previously served as a NCAA collegiate baseball/basketball coach as well as a strength training/conditioning professional. Mike is currently serving on the Advisory Board of ISSN and the NSCA Certification Commission Executive Council. His primary lines of research are in the area of sport/exercise nutrition and strength and conditioning. Dr. Greenwood serves on the Editorial Boards of the Strength and Conditioning Journal, Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition and has reviewed manuscripts for Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. John Ivy, Ph.D., FISSN is the Chairman, Kinesiology and Health Education, Margie Gurley Seay Centennial Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at The University of Texas; his educational background includes: 1980 PDF Washington University School of Medicine ; 1976 Ph.D. University of Maryland ; 1974 M.A. University of Maryland ; 1970 B.S. Victor Katch, Ed.D., FISSN Victor Katch, Ed.D. is a Professor of Movement Science in the Division of Kinesiology and Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. Susan M. Kleiner, Ph.D., R.D., FACN, CNS, FISSN is the foremost nutrition authority on eating for strength, and her POWER EATING program has reshaped the lives of thousands. Dr. Kleiner is the owner of HIGH PERFORMANCE NUTRITION, a consulting firm specializing in media communications, industry consulting, and personal counseling, on Mercer Island, Washington. She is also an Affiliate Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical History and Ethics at The University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Kleiner is the author of POWER EATING, 2nd Edition (Human Kinetics, 2001), rated as Muscle & Fitness Magazine"ss #1 Diet Book of the Year (1999), and the only diet book in Shape Magazine"s, 5 Great Books for Your Fitness Library" (May 2001). William J. Kraemer, Ph.D., FISSN is the Director of Research in the Dean"ss office of the Neag School of Education and a full professor in the department of kinesiology working in the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Connecticut at Storrs. He also is a full professor in the department of physiology and neurobiology and a professor of medicine at the University of Connecticut Health Center. He earned a PhD in physiology from the University of Wyoming in 1984. He held multiple appointments at Pennsylvania State University, where he was professor of applied physiology, director of research in the Center for Sports Medicine, associate director of the Center for Cell Research, and faculty member in the kinesiology department and the Noll Physiological Research Center. He is also editor in chief of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.


 Richard Kreider Ph.D., FISSN serves as Professor, Department Head, and Thomas A. and Joan Read Endowed Chair for Disadvantaged Youth in the Department of Health & Kinesiology at Texas A&M Univerisity. Dr. Kreider also directs the Exercise & Sport Nutrition Lab. Prior to coming to Texas A&M, Dr. Kreider served as Chair of the Department of Health, Human Performance & Recreation at Baylor University and Director of the Exercise & Sport Nutrition Lab and Center for Exercise, Nutrition and Preventive Health. Dr. Kreider has conducted numerous studies on nutrition and exercise and has published three books, more than 400 research articles and abstracts in scientific journals, and over 150 articles for health and fitness magazines. Dr. Kreider is a Fellow of the American College of Sport Medicine (ACSM); an active member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA); a founding board member and Fellow of the International Society of Sports Nutrition; and, Co-Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition. Dr. Kreider has received over 12 million dollars in external funding to support research related to the role of exercise and nutrition on health, disease, rehabilitation, and/or performance.


Hector L. Lopez, M.D., FAAPMR - Dr. Lopez is recognized for applying his diverse background in nutrition, exercise science, sports and musculoskeletal medicine, endocrinolgy & metabolism to improving not only the health and quality of life in his patients, but also athletic performance in recreational and elite athletes. Dr. Lopez directs patient care at his centers to optimize outcomes by combining the best methods from the fields of musculoskeletal medicine, pain management, exercise physiology, nutrition and physical rehabilitation. He received his training at the world renowned Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine - Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.  He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specilist (CSCS) through the NSCA, and holds a Masters degree in nutritional biochemistry with concentration in exercise physiology at Northwestern University.    His clinical interests include:  Spine, Sports and Orthopaedic Medicine, Electrodiagnostic Medicine, Interventional Spine & Pain Management, Optimal Aging and Sarcopenia. His research interests include: hormonal modulation and nutritional intervention to improve human performance and rehabilitation outcomes of injured patients.  An active researcher, speaker and author, he has presented nationally and published articles and scientific abstracts on various topics related to nutrition, stroke, orthopaedic injuries, chronic pain disorders, athletic performance, optimal aging, and physican-based exercise prescription. Dr. Lopez is the founding partner and medical director of 3 facilities in NJ that focus on integrative rehabilitation medicine and human performance to treat patients with the full spectrum of orthopaedic injuries ( Performance Spine & Sports Medicine, LLC. and Northeast Spine and Sports Medicine, PC.). Ron Mendel, Ph.D., FISSN holds a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from Kent State University. A former Assistant Professor at Walsh University (N. Canton, OH) in the Department of Physical Therapy, he is currently the Program Director for Exercise Science at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. He is also President of the Ohio Research Group conducting sport and dietary supplement research, sport specific training and civil service job performance programming.

 

 


 

Mona Rosene, M.S., RD is a nutrition expert who has worked in the food and supplement industry since 2003. As a Nutrition Research Scientist with WhiteWave Foods, she investigates functional ingredients for product development and innovation, provides input for claim language, and coordinates clinical trials. Mona is also the founder of Peak to Peak Nutrition (www.peaktopeaknutrition.com), a nutrition consulting business designed to help clients & corporations reach their health potential. Specializing in sports nutrition and complementary and alternative nutrition, Mona translates the science into applicable information for clients to use in their daily life. David Sandler, M.S., CSCS*D, CCS, HFD, CPS, FISSN is President and Co-Founder of StrengthPro Inc. He has presented more than 230 lectures with organizations such as the NSCA, ACSM, AAHPERD, IFPA, SWIS, ECA and SCW Fitness. David has authored or co-authored five books: Sports Power, Weight Training Fundamentals, The Resistance Band Workout Book, Plyo Power, and Strength Training Everyone. He has also been the lead exercise and sports physiologist for more than 30 episodes of television for National Geographic’s series Fight Science, Super Strength, the Science of Steroids, Humanly Possible, and the Emmy Award winning Sport Science series on Fox Sports Network. He is the Chairman of The Arnold Strength Training Summit at the Arnold Classic and is a consultant and member of the advisory board for Muscle and Fitness magazine and the Performance Training Journal of the NSCA.  Jeffrey R. Stout, Ph.D., FISSN is currently an Assistant Professor and Director of the Metabolic and Body Composition Laboratory in the Department of Health and Exercise Science. He received a undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from Concordia University in 1989 and a masters and doctorate in Exercise Physiology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1992 and 1995, respectively. In addition, Dr. Stout is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (FACSM), Fellow of the International Society of Sports Nutrition and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). Dr. Stout has conducted and published numerous studies that focus on nutritional intervention on exercise performance, muscle function and body composition in journals such as Journal of Applied Physiology, Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research and Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. Furthermore, he has edited and co-authored six books on sports nutrition. Dr. Stout serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research and Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition and is a regular reviewer for journals such as Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise and Journal of Sports Science and Medicine. He has also attended and regularly presented at each NSCA National Conference since 1993 and was recently elected to the NSCA Research Committee. Robert Wildman PhD RD LD received his PhD from The Ohio State University, MS from Florida State University and BS from The University of Pittsburgh and serves as adjunct faculty in the Department of Human Nutrition at Kansas State University. Rob is the author of several books including Sports and Fitness Nutrition, The Nutritionist: Food, Nutrition and Optimal Health, and The Handbook of Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods and is an expert nutritionist on LifeScript.com and a regular writer for Status Fitness Magazine. Rob is an industry consultant at Demeter Consultants LLC and is the creator of TheNutritionDr.com, a nutrition, health and fitness website. He is a registered dietitian and a licensed dietitian in the state of Ohio.

 


Darryn Willoughby, Ph.D., FISSN holds BS and MEd degrees in Exercise Science from Tarleton State University and a PhD in Neuromuscular Physiology and Biochemistry with a sub-emphasis in Nutritional Biochemistry from Texas A&M University. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and International Society of Sport Nutrition (ISSN). He is also the current President of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a certified exercise and sport nutritionist from the ISSN. Dr. Willoughby is an internationally recognized scholar and one of the top leaders in the field where his primary research focuses on the molecular mechanisms regulating muscle hypertrophy and atrophy and the effectiveness and efficacy of nutritional supplements in helping to support muscle hypertrophy, attenuate atrophy, and improve exercise and sport performance. He is well published in scientific research journals such as the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Journal of Sport Science and Medicine, and the International Journal of Sports Medicine. Laurent Bannock, MS, CISSN is a performance nutritionist and exercise physiologist, based in London. His education includes Exercise and Health Studies at City University, London - and then went on to earn a Masters Degree in Exercise Science and Health Promotion from California University of Pennsylvania (PA, USA), as well as a Masters Degree in Nutrition (concentrating on Sports Nutrition) from Huntington College of Health Sciences (TN, USA). Laurent is currently taking the advanced sports nutrition diploma program with the International Olympic Committee. He has been involved in the fitness industry for 14 years, Having spent spent the last 8 years, living between the UK and US working with a variety of athletes.
